Caterpillar, Hawthorne Cat Have Experience to Respond to Specialized, Unique Needs of Militaries, Federal Agencies

Whether it's standard products, modification of existing products, or entirely new products, Caterpillar^® and Hawthorne Cat^® have a long history of successful support for our troops and federal employees in just about any application.  Caterpillar first found its value during World War I. Caterpillar crawlers were first used for towing heavy equipment and artillery to the bogged forward areas. The English, noting their success, quickly modified the concept into the first practical tank, which forever changed ground warfare. Caterpillar tractors themselves served the war effort by hauling artillery and supplies. In all, more than 10,000 Caterpillar vehicles served the Allied forces, and the international exposure that the Caterpillar tractor received during the war did much to popularize the tracked vehicle. During World War II, Caterpillar products found fame with the Seabees, Construction Battalions of the United States Navy, who built airfields and other facilities in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Caterpillar equipment and engines has also played a major role through the Korean and Vietnam wars, Operation Desert Storm during the early 1990s to Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts of today. 

Hawthorne Cat has been supporting this effort since 1956. The initial San Diego Caterpillar service territory included Camp Pendleton and the various local US Naval bases. Its services have ranged from direct military support to working with local major defense contractors to meet military requirements. Providing packaging support for AOE Ships in the late 1980’s, rental equipment to the Point Loma Naval Submarine Base for submarine maintenance and supplying and installing machine gun mounts on U.S. Marine vehicles are just a few of the diverse projects Hawthorne has performed. This is in addition to one of its core competencies – servicing Caterpillar tractors. 

In 2004, Hawthorne expanded its defense and military support with the acquisition of the Caterpillar service territory in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. It has added Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, Barking Sands and Anderson Air Force Base to the list, just to name a few. Prime and stand-by power generation, rentals of construction equipment and service, both on land and on vessels, are just a few recent projects Hawthorne has been involved in. 

In 2008, Hawthorne became a General Services Administration (GSA) Contractor Holder. Working with GSA, Hawthorne has been successful in offering the military “non-traditional” services. It made the investment to assist the military in streamlining their acquisition process for services often sought. These services include construction equipment rentals/leases, portable power generation rentals, field and shop service at all Hawthorne locations. Today, Hawthorne is fully engaged in supporting the U.S. Navy relocation efforts in Guam with facilities, equipment and personnel. Working directly with the military and local defense contractors, Hawthorne is busy supplying equipment, rentals, service and local expertise. While Caterpillar and Hawthorne can provide everything from power modules to track-type tractors to motor graders, it's more than what we make and provide - it's what we make possible for the federal government agencies and military commands that we support in our service territories.
