Caterpillar Releases AP500E Asphalt Paver

Peoria, Ill. - Caterpillar Inc. announces the addition of the AP500E Asphalt Paver to the Paving Products machine family. Excellent mobility, superb visibility, powerful C4.4 engine, quick setup, and a comfortable operating environment are just some of the features that you can expect from the AP500E wheel-type asphalt paver.

The compact, lighter weight design allows contractors to haul the paver along with other necessary job site equipment, maximizing machine transport while minimizing costs. The AP500E when equipped with the AS2252C screed has an operating weight of 15 290 kg (33,715 lb) and when equipped with the AS3251C screed has an operating weight of 15 520 kg (34,220 lb).

The AP500E features a Cat® C4.4 engine with ACERTTM Technology that is U.S. EPA Tier 3 emissions compliant, wheel undercarriage, dual operating stations with Advisor display, tilting consoles, high capacity cooling system, belt-driven generator, and unique material handling system with independent conveyor and auger controls.

The powerful Cat® C4.4 engine is a 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that provides 106 kW (142 hp) of power. A deck-mounted cooling system provides cool intake air in order to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions. The exhaust air exits toward the hopper providing a cool engine compartment and cleaner working environment for the crew.

The dual swing-out stations, tilting consoles and low profile design of the cooling system provide good forward visibility that enables the operator to communicate effectively with the truck driver while monitoring mix in the hopper. Extending the stations beyond the machine frame also enables good joint-matching capability and optimal rearward visibility to the auger chamber.

An Advisor Monitoring System located on the left operating station provides an interactive interface to assist the operator. The system includes project planning calculators, start-up checklists, engine operating conditions, and many other features to assist the operator. The system also lists fault codes for machine functions, making troubleshooting quick and easy.

Whether most of your paving applications take place on hard surfaces or soft base materials, the non-directional radial drive tires provide a large ground contact area for good flotation, stability and tractive effort for pushing trucks and working on inclines.

A position sensor located in the left steering cylinder helps maintain consistent travel speeds when making turns by adjusting the drive speed of the propel motors according to the steering angle of the front wheels, leading to better mat quality and less wear on the drive system. The front wheel assist option provides power to the front bogie wheels for added traction when pushing trucks or working on soft base, while the all-wheel drive option provides power to the front and rear bogie wheels, maximizing tractive effort.

Mobility and consistent speeds are keys to efficient paving operations. The Cat system is equipped with automatic speed control and three propel/steering modes: PAVE, TRAVEL and MANEUVER. The TRAVEL mode provides speeds of up to 16 km/hr (10 mph), enabling the AP500E to be quickly repositioned around the job site. The PAVE mode enables the automatics for mix delivery, while the MANEUVER mode allows 0.75 m (2' 6") inside turning radius for excellent mobility in tight quarters.

The material handling system is the most advanced in the paving industry. Automated controls and well-designed components reduce segregation potential and maximize efficiency for higher mat quality. The system utilizes four individual pumps that enable each conveyor and each auger to deliver the exact amount of mix to the screed. The left and right conveyors in addition to the left and right augers are controlled independently ensuring mix demand is met when increasing or decreasing paving widths. Ratio control dials and sensors (mechanical or sonic) signal the augers and conveyors to run faster or slower when changing paving widths, thus keeping the head of material at the set level. When paving around obstacles the system automatically makes the necessary adjustments for uniform mix delivery.

The 25 kW, belt-driven generator provides quiet power for the electric screed heat, auxiliary lights and job site tools. The 7 kW auxiliary power panel is equipped with six, 120-volt receptacles and one, 240-volt receptacle, providing power for job site lighting and other work tools.

Rigid supports, reliable heating systems and easily adjustable screed plates make Cat® screeds the choice of commercial contractor's. The AS2252C Vers-A-MatTM vibratory screed features narrow front-mounted extenders. The extenders utilize 229 mm (9") wide screed plates, allowing it to work close to obstacles and making it a perfect fit for commercial applications by reducing the need for handwork when changing paving widths.

The AS3251C Extend-A-Mat TM vibratory screed features hydraulically driven, rar-mounted extenders. Heavy-duty support tubes stabilize the extenders, providing rigidity for even material flow when paving wider widths. This screed performs well on highways and streets as well as commercial applications.

The AP555E features include a Cat® 4.4 engine with ACERT® Technology, dual operating stations with the Advisor Monitoring System (AMS), tilting consoles, exclusive Mobil-tracTM undercarriage, high capacity cooling system, belt-driven generator, and unique material handling system with independent auger and conveyor controls.

The powerful Cat® C4.4 engine with ACERTTM Technology is U.S. EPA Tier 3 engine emission compliant. The 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine provides 106 kW (142 hp) of power. A deck-mounted cooling system provides cool intake air in order to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions. The exhaust air exits toward the hopper providing a cool engine compartment and cleaner working environment for the crew.

The highly reliable Mobil-tracTM undercarriage provides excellent flotation and limits disturbance on soft base materials, ensuring uniform mat thickness. Large oscillating bogies and hydraulic accumulators progressively overcome surface irregularities with minimal tow point movement limiting the effects of curbs, mix piles, and manholes. The Mobil-trac undercarriage can be equipped with one of two belt designs. The tread-bar design provides better traction when grade conditions are soft, while the smooth belt provides more contact surface for good performance when pushing trucks and less base disruption when turning.

Mobility and consistent speeds are keys to efficient paving operations. The Cat system is equipped with automatic speed control and three propel/steering modes: PAVE, TRAVEL and MANEUVER. The PAVE mode enables the automatics for mix delivery, while the TRAVEL mode maximizes speed. The MANEUVER mode permits the tracks to counter-rotate, enabling the machine to turn within its own foot-print for superb turning capability in tight quarters.

Caterpillar Releases the CD54 Vibratory Asphalt Compactor

Caterpillar Inc. of Peoria, Ill. U.S., has announced an addition to its asphalt compactor line. This CD54 vibratory asphalt compactor is intended for production-oriented customers, winning over operators with its versatile vibratory system, wide offset capability, performance in turns, and comfortable operating environment. The CD54 allows Cat dealers to continue to compete in the growing 8 - 11 metric ton class. Typical applications include highways, city streets, county roads, lane additions, industrial sites, overlays, airport runways and other medium to high-production paving jobs.

The CD54 has a standard operating weight of 9500 kg (20,944 lb) and maximum operating weight of 10 900 kg (24,030 lb). The standard compaction width is 1700 mm (67 in) and when combined with the 1.3 m (51 in) offset feature provides a total compaction width of 3.0 m (118 in) for excellent job site versatility.

The CD54 is equipped with front and rear pivoting split drums and four steering modes, making maneuverability an exceptional quality. The four steering modes include front drum, rear drum, coordinated, and crab operation. When fully offset, coordinated steering enables a 2.8 m (110 in) inside turning radius for good mobility near obstacles. The steering system combines electronic control with the feel of hydraulic. When encountering resistance, friction to the steering wheel increases, providing an intuitive feel that is extremely beneficial when operating next to vertical barriers such as curbs.

The exclusive split drum propel system enables the machine to make tight turns without damaging the hot mat. When turning, the outside drum half rotates faster than the inside drum, eliminating the potential for shoving that can occur with standard drum designs.

The four-cylinder Cat® 3054C Turbo-charged engine provides 74.5 kW (99.5 hp) at 2200 rpm and meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 emission requirements.

The water spray system features a single, 750 L (198 gal) tank that delivers many hours of operation. A sight gauge viewable from inside the cab and also from ground level allows the water tank level to be monitored at all times. System controls are conveniently located on the front control panel and a thumb switch mounted on the propel lever provides convenient on/off control. The Cat dual water pumps are designed to be the most durable water pump available. Filtration is provided by strainers located in the fill port, before the water pump and in the spray nozzles, for triple protection that minimizes clogs. The strainers are highly accessible and can be quickly removed for cleaning without the use of special tools.

The CD54 can be used on all phases of asphalt compaction, reducing the need for a variety of rollers. A switch on the steering console automatically matches amplitude and frequency for complete control from the operating station. The dual amplitude, dual frequency system provides a high frequency of 53 Hz (3,180 vpm) and corresponding amplitude of 0.34 mm (0.013 in) for higher working speeds and thinner lifts. The low frequency setting provides 42 Hz (2, 520 vpm) with corresponding amplitude of 0.62 mm (0.024 in) for thicker lifts and tougher mix designs.

The ROPS/FOPS cab with full floor-to-ceiling glass on the front and rear corners provide an unobstructed line of sight to the drum edges, drum surfaces, and both sides of the machine. The right hand window in the cab can be easily opened for additional side visibility when required. Optimum visibility to the drums enables the operators to supply the correct amount of water to the drum surfaces, but also ensures optimum view when operating in offset steering mode. The multi-position seating provides a variety of adjustments that help the operator stay focused and in control. Multiple seat adjustments allow the operator to customize weight, height, armrests, and the backrest to suit their individual needs.

These machines are designed for ease and speed of service. Daily and routine service points are accessible from ground level. Swing-out doors provide access to filters and service points. Extended service intervals reduce down time and increase machine availability.

Maintenance-free hitch design provides unmatched reliability and the optional bio-oil capability offers an environmentally friendly alternative to standard oil.

Tapered roller bearings in patented split drum and articulation joints are sealed for life and do not require lubrication.

Electronic control modules (ECM) for the propel and vibratory systems are compatible with other Cat compactors, making diagnostic efforts quick and easy.

Sight gauges enable quick checks of radiator coolant and hydraulic oil levels as well as engine air filter restriction.

Standard pressure taps allow quick diagnosis of the entire hydraulic system.

Peoria, Ill. - Caterpillar Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the PM200 Cold Planer with an optional 2.2m (88") cutting rotor. Customers now have two cutting width options when purchasing the PM200: the standard 2.0m (79") rotor or the new 2.2m (88") rotor option. The new 2.2m (88") rotor option provides greater efficiency and productivity by reducing passes during applications that benefit from a wider cutting rotor, such as mainline, high productivity milling. Fewer passes will contribute to a reduction in fuel burn. The standard 2.0m (79") rotor provides greater versatility for urban applications and milling tasks that require a high degree of maneuverability and precision.

The PM200 is a high-production, highly maneuverable half-lane milling machine that performs controlled full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass. Operating weight for the PM200 is approximately 30 100 kg (66,359 lbs) with the standard 2.0m (79") rotor package; the weight increases to 31 500 kg (69,445 lbs) with the optional 2.2m (88") rotor package.

Both the 2.0m (79") and the optional 2.2m (88") wide rotors feature conical tool holders and have a maximum cutting depth of 320 mm (12.6"). The 2.0m (79") conical tool holder rotor is equipped with 178 carbide-tipped tools, and the optional 2.2m (88") conical tool holder rotor is equipped with 193 carbide-tipped tools. Both rotor options position the tools in durable three-piece, quick release tool holders arranged in a chevron pattern for maximum breakout force. The quick release conical tool holders feature a tapered fit, maintaining tightness in the holder base. The mandrel features large, replaceable, carbide-faced loading paddles to effectively move milled material onto the collecting conveyor, resulting in higher production and less wear on the inside of the rotor chamber and cutting tools. Triple-tree tool placement on rotor end cutters provides optimum tool spacing to clean up loose material and reduces wear on the rotor when maneuvering in the cut.

There is an optional dust-reduction package available for PM200 machines equipped with the 2.2m (88") rotor option. The attachment will more efficiently control dust during operation.
CARB Postpones Enforcement of Off-Road Diesel Emissions Regulations

With a construction industry beset by state-wide economic depression -- and facing AGC proof that the downturn has already slashed off-road-equipment emissions more than amply to meet regulators' clean-air goals -- the California Air Resources Board has postponed enforcement of its emissions regulations for off-road diesels.

Air Resources Board Executive Officer James N. Goldstene issued the following statement today: “Over the last several years, the construction industry has felt the sting of the faltering economy with reduced activity and idled off-road equipment. This has made it difficult for contractors to pay for required clean-air upgrades to their fleets. Along with this reduced construction activity has been a corresponding reduction in construction emissions.

“Because of this, ahead of a March 1, 2010, compliance deadline, ARB will issue an enforcement advisory to notify all stakeholders affected by the off-road equipment regulation that effective immediately, and until further notice, no enforcement action will be taken for noncompliance. In addition, on March 11 an Executive Officer hearing will be held where stakeholders may testify on the question of whether the off-road regulations should be further modified to account for the down economy and subsequent emissions reductions. That information will be included in an already-scheduled update to the full Board at its April meeting.

“ARB will continue to evaluate the impact of the recession on emissions from all sources and make adjustments to our regulations as needed. However, the health of all Californians requires that all industries continue to use the cleanest, most efficient equipment possible. Clean air is not a luxury – it is a right. We need to continue to work toward goals that save us all money in healthcare costs, lost work and school days, and contribute to our quality of life.”

Caterpillar Showcases Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB Readiness and Leadership

PEORIA, Ill. - Unveiling the next generation of industry leading products, Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) is showcasing its Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB readiness at an emissions strategy update event for industry professionals at the company's Edwards, Illinois, Learning and Demonstration facility. Caterpillar's Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB engine technology includes stateof-the-art integrated system design built upon the success of the company's ACERT technology. Additional technologies, including powertrain innovation and aftertreatment devices, will be specifically tailored and applied to products to provide maximum value to customers while meeting the stringent emission requirements mandated by law.

"Our Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB products will be delivered on time, on cost and with the quality, durability and reliability our customers expect and deserve," said Caterpillar Group President, Stu Levenick. "Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB is the most aggressive and expensive product development initiative in Caterpillar history. We began this journey with Tier 1 in 1996, and with each new tier we continue to build upon our proven technologies, product development and strong dealer network."

Caterpillar's significant research and development costs are primarily due to the new product introduction programs related to Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB emissions compliance.

"Our pricing strategy will focus on providing customers with the best value proposition in the market, a broad-based deployment process that minimizes disruption while at the same time allows the company to recover significant multi-year costs necessary to meet the new regulations," said Levenick. "While the details have not yet been finalized, price actions associated with recovering the costs of Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB for our machines in the 130-560 kilowatt power range may increase prices by as much as 12 percent over our Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB introduction time frame. We anticipate the first increase, starting January 1, 2011, to be about one third of the 12 percent increase. Pricing for commercial engine applications, such as electric power, industrial and petroleum, will vary depending on product and power range. We plan to initiate broad-based emissions related price actions also starting January 1, 2011, for all products, including those utilizing transitional provisions."

In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union introduced Tier 4 and Stage IIIB/IV emission standards respectively, with effective dates ranging from 2008 to 2015. Tier 4//Stage IV standards require emissions of particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to be reduced by more than 90 percent.

"It's not just about emissions - our focus is on the customer," said Marketing and Product Support Vice President, Rod Beeler. "Our ultimate goal is to exceed expectations by developing products that are safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible without sacrificing performance."

It is projected that Caterpillar will accumulate nearly one million hours of testing on Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB engines and machines by the end of 2010. During the strategy update, Caterpillar previewed some of its newly developed machines including a 336E Hydraulic Excavator, 140M Motor Grader, 980H Wheel Loader and 775 Off-Highway Truck. The company will also showcase its Tier 4 Interim//Stage IIIB readiness at the international trade show, bauma 2010, this April in Munich, Germany.

New Control System for Small Cat® Loaders Allows Operators to Adapt Machine Response to Skill Level

For Worldwide Release: January 2010

Release Number: 307PR09

Recognizing that the operating skill of workers using small loaders on typical jobsites ranges from the novice to the expert, Caterpillar has developed a new control feature that allows each operator to run a Cat® C-Series Skid-Steer, Multi-Terrain or Compact-Track Loader safely, productively, and comfortably. The new Hystat Response Control System (HRCS) uses software that permits the loader's hydrostatic drive/steer system to be adjusted to one of three response rates-standard, intermediate or maximum-to determine how rapidly the machine accelerates/decelerates and how quickly it responds to steering commands.

Each of the new control system's successive settings results in more aggressive response, permitting skilled operators to use the machine to its full potential, but also accommodating operators of lesser experience. The net result is that jobsite tasks are handled efficiently and productively-no matter who is in the seat.

The HRCS standard setting provides acceleration/deceleration rates that feel smooth and controlled, as does steering response. In the intermediate setting, the machine will start and stop more quickly, and steering-response lag is diminished. When operated in the maximum setting, the loader will accelerate aggressively in forward, will stop abruptly and will respond instantaneously to steering commands.

C-Series loaders equipped with the Cat Advanced Machine Information and Control System (AMICS) option allow the operator to select one of the three response rates from the monitor in the cab. A visual indicator (one, two or three bars) indicates the selected setting. Non-AMICS equipped machines can be programmed with one of the three response rates via the Cat Electronic Technician system. The only cost involved for machines in service may be that of a nominal charge by the dealer for programming.

Owners of non-AMICS-equipped machines can capitalize on full HRCS potential, however, by adding an AMICS kit. The kit typically is installed in about an hour by the Cat dealer and has a list price of approximately $700. Equipping a Cat C-Series loader with the AMICS kit not only allows full use of HRCS capability, but also enhances the operator's control of the machine by providing features such as Implement Speed Control and Work Speed Control (creep mode), as well as providing an interface for an AccuGrade system.

For more information about the HRCS and installation of the AMICS kit, customers should contact a local Cat dealer.

New Features Make the Cat® 973D Track Loader More Powerful, Productive and Fuel-Efficient—Plus Easier to Operate

Completing the Cat® D-Series Track Loader lineup is the new 973D, featuring load-sensing hydraulics, joystick steering, new operator's station (with tilting cab) and 10 percent more power than its 973C predecessor. The new loader carries on the 973C's "all-purpose performer" reputation and retains much of its solid design, including the Cat C9 engine, hydrostatic drive, single-fabrication mainframe, Z-bar loader linkage and oscillating undercarriage. The 973D is a "one-machine workforce" with the features to take on the toughest jobs—at construction sites or in the harsh environments of steel mills, landfills, quarries and demolition sites.

The 973D's new closed-center, load-sensing implement hydraulic system uses a variable-displacement pump that produces only the precise volume of oil actually required for the job at hand. By contrast, the 973C's hydraulic pump produced a constant oil volume, whether required or not. The net result is that the 973D pumps less oil, thus conserving fuel, generating less heat and freeing horsepower to drive the tracks more efficiently. The new system also allows seamless, simultaneous use of lift, tilt and travel functions.

Complementing the new hydraulic system are lift and tilt cylinders using position-sensing electronics, which allow operators to set lift and tilt kick-outs from the cab. Kick-outs are quickly reset for each job—or even each truck—to assure fast cycle times. In addition, end-of-travel snubbing assures that cylinders stop smoothly with less shock.

Operator-station amenities

In the new operator's station, buyers now can choose either joystick steering or pedal steering. The steering joystick also provides transmission control, allowing the operator to effortlessly select travel direction and ground speed, while the pedal-steer system works in conjunction with the Cat "V-pattern" transmission controller. Both systems assure fast, precise steering—but now buyers can select the system preferred by their operators.

Buyers also have a choice of loader controls—either joystick or two-lever. The 973C offered this choice, but loader controls for the new 973D are seat-mounted and electro-hydraulically actuated, compared with console-mounted and pilot-actuated (hydraulically assisted). The new seat-mounted, low-effort controls move with the operator as the seat is adjusted, transmit less vibration and provide extremely fast, precise hydraulic response.

The new cab is sound-suppressed (rated at 74 dB-A), sealed, pressurized, air-conditioned, resiliently mounted and tilts (30 degrees in the field, 90 degrees in the shop) for access to major components. Increased glass area improves visibility all around, and the new fender design yields sharper sightlines out the rear window. A compact new dash includes both a gauge cluster that monitors vital systems and the Messenger display screen, which provides real-time performance and diagnostic information.

Reliable power train, robust structures, easy service

The 8.8-liter, 263-net horsepower (196 kW) Cat C9 diesel engine, which meets U.S. EPA Tier-3 and European Union Stage IIIA standards, uses proprietary Caterpillar ACERT™ Technology for exceptional emissions-control and fuel-economy. A new on-demand, viscous-clutch cooling fan helps further lower fuel consumption and sound.

The electronically controlled Cat Hystat hydrostatic drive system powers and controls each track independently via a variable-displacement pump and motor. The Hystat system allows both tracks to be powered through gradual turns, simplifies straight-line travel when working across slopes and provides exceptional maneuverability with its counter-rotation capability.

The 973D's main-frame/loader-tower is fabricated of single-slab primary rails, cross-member reinforcing and castings or forgings in high-stress areas to provide long-term durability for supporting multiple rebuilds. Oscillating track frames help smooth the operator's ride, lessen shock loads to the machine and contribute to the 973D's stability. Z-bar-type loader linkage uses massive single-slab boom arms and dual bell-cranks (each with its own tilt cylinder) to deliver exceptional breakout power.

Service access to drive-train and hydraulic-system components is simplified on the 973D with its tilting cab. The cab can be tilted a full 90 degrees with an external lifting device and 30 degrees in the field using an hydraulic jack available as standard. All routine-maintenance points are easily accessible from ground level, and oil-sampling ports, quick-connect pressure taps and ground-level emergency-shut-down switch are standard equipment.

Job-specific configurations

Two Waste-Handling Packages (Standard and Extreme) add substantial guarding, debris barriers, cooling-system enhancements and an air-intake pre-cleaner. The Standard Package is designed for landfills, transfer stations and material-recovery facilities, while the Severe Package affords maximum protection in the most demanding work, such as demolition.

The Steel-Mill Package, allowing the 973D to work safely and reliably when handling hot slag around blast furnaces, features a sealed undercarriage; fire-retardant fluids; heat shields for the fuel tank, power train and hydraulic components; silicone seals; heat-resistant windshield; and remote parking-brake release.

For consistent work in soft underfoot conditions, the Wide-Gauge Package provides a stretched track gauge and low-ground-pressure track shoes. These features are complemented with a wider bucket that boosts productivity in grading and backfilling applications.

In addition to these application-specific packages, other optional packages are available, including a three-shank parallelogram ripper, multi-purpose bucket, added counterweight and a deluxe maintenance package for fast oil changes and fuel-sediment flushing. Caterpillar also is ready to design custom solutions to meet any customer's exact needs.

Medium Wheel Loaders—Foundation of the Cat® Wheel Loader Range for 50 Years

In December of 1959, the first production Cat wheel loader was driven off the assembly line at the Caterpillar plant in Aurora, IL - the 944 Wheel Traxcavator.

The 944, fitted with a 2-cubic yard (1.5-m³) bucket and available with either a 105-horsepower (78 kW) gas or diesel engine, was the culmination of a seven-year development effort-and the beginning of Caterpillar's leadership in the worldwide market for mid-size wheel loaders. Caterpillar's 50-year dominance in this market segment has hinged, simply, on customers recognizing the inherent value of the Cat Wheel Loader-its fundamental reliability and durability, coupled with exceptionally strong parts and service support.

The 944 was joined in 1960 by two additional models, the 80-horsepower (60 kW) model 922 and the 140-horsepower (104 kW) model 966, using buckets of 1.25 and 2.75 cubic yards (0.92 and 2.1 m³), respectively. A 1960 Caterpillar press release stated "these machines are operated by conveniently located controls, have a two-speed forward/two-speed reverse power-shift transmission and attain a maximum reverse speed of 30 mph."

The release also quoted W. S. Zeigler, domestic sales manager, who summed up Caterpillar's goal for developing the new wheel-loader line: "These new Traxcavators will enable operators to perform their work quickly and well, and give them safer working conditions."

Time changes most everything, but the basic qualities Mr. Zeigler noted about the first Cat wheel loaders have remained constant through 50 years of continual refinement and through the placement of more than 100,000 Cat Medium Wheel Loaders in the hands of customers.

Although the Cat Wheel Loader line today ranges from the 55-horsepower (41-kW) 904B to the 1,577-horsepower (1 176 kW) 994F, the eight-model lineup of Medium Wheel Loaders-938H, IT38H, 950H, 962H, IT62H, 966H, 972H and 980H-remains the foundation of the line and serves the largest market segment. These models offer standard buckets from 3 to 8 cubic yards (2.3 to 6.1 m³), can be fitted with a diversity of work tools and take on the toughest jobs in applications as varied as material handling, scrap yards, quarries and forestry.

Five decades of refinement

Developing new products in the 1950s was a long, laborious process, necessitating many prototype models and thousands of hours of in-the-dirt testing. Today, of course, the power of computer-aided design allows testing virtual prototypes, and today's engineers can perform more evaluation in hours than could their 1950s counterparts in months of field testing.

But the basic philosophy of Caterpillar's product development process has not changed; when designing the 944, engineers asked customers what features they wanted in wheel loaders-and Caterpillar engineers are still asking that question. The 944 engineers learned, for instance, that wheel-loader users wanted loader arms and hydraulic cylinders positioned forward of the operator's compartment. Good idea-because the side-mounted loader arms of the day's competitive designs brushed past the operator's elbows with every bucket load.

Front-mounted lift arms were included in the 944's design and became a Caterpillar exclusive. Through the decades, the design of Cat Medium Wheel Loaders has reflected customer input and the best technology to yield efficient, durable, safe machines that operate at low-costs.

The 944's pre-combustion-chamber diesel engine, for example, gave way in the early 1980s to more efficient direct-injection engines, then to electronically controlled engines, and finally to the Cat ACERT diesels that deliver a combination of fuel efficiency, emissions control and power density that 1950s engineers would have thought impossible.

Likewise, early-loader hydraulic systems, using gear-type pumps and mechanical controls, have been refined into the Cat Medium Wheel Loaders' extraordinarily efficient load-sensing systems that use variable-displacement pumps and Caterpillar-designed pressure-compensating valves to reduce horsepower draw and save fuel. In the cab, long-throw hydraulic control levers gave way to lower-effort pilot controls, then to intuitive electro-hydraulic joysticks that provide Cat machines with precise hydraulic response in all operating situations.

The list goes on: Caterpillar was an early pioneer of articulated steering, using proprietary center-hinge designs that greatly improved maneuverability-and today's optional Command Control Steering allows lock-to-lock articulation through just ± 70 degrees of wheel turn. The 944's drum brakes gave way to more efficient disc brakes, then to internal multiple-disc brakes in the Cat Four-Piece Axle, which is an exclusive component in every Medium Wheel Loader.

Power-shift transmissions, once controlled by mechanical linkage, are now electronically managed and feature Variable Shift Control to match gear-change patterns to the application. Belt-driven cooling fans have given way to fuel-saving on-demand fans; loader linkages have been strengthened and simplified; and the stark operator stations of early loaders are now the ultimate in operator comfort, convenience and safety (even allowing hands-off operation when the optional Aggregate AutoDig system automates the loading process).

And compared to the 944, today's Cat Medium Wheel Loaders really do think for themselves. The exclusive Cat Monitoring System continually checks machine health; Product Link, a satellite-based system, provides two-way information exchange between onboard machine systems and the Caterpillar Network Operations Center; and the Equipment Manager System places Product Link data on the owner's computer screen, allowing efficient management of machine utilization, maintenance/repair decisions and security risks.

W. S. Zeigler's words are still true of Cat Medium Wheel Loaders; these machines still "enable operators to perform their work quickly and well, and give them safer working conditions." Today's machines also still deliver the essential reliability and durability that has been the hallmark of Cat Wheel Loaders from the very start-and today's machines, building on the persistent refinement of their predecessors, continue to add even greater value for the operator, the owner-and the environment.

Cat celebrates 100 years of global trade

PEORIA - If not for the vision of Caterpillar Inc.'s forefathers, the company could well be only a small shell of itself today, Chairman Jim Owens said Monday.

Instead, the company's early leadership at Holt Manufacturing Co. - which merged with C.L. Best Tractor Co. to form Caterpillar in 1925 - saw the need to be players on the global stage if real growth was going to happen.

"We have to give our forefathers credit for their vision," Owens said in an exclusive interview with the Journal Star. "They understood we needed to be global players for the kind of equipment we make, and it has become a heritage of our company to be exporters."

It was 100 years ago today - Nov. 24, 1909 - that the first Caterpillar machine crawled outside the United States.

The company's first export was to a sugar plantation in Mexico, a rather auspicious beginning to the part of the business that today has Caterpillar one of the top global manufacturers and exporters in the world.

The first export was a Holt Caterpillar Model B, manufactured by the Northern Holt Co. of Minneapolis. It was sold to the Tabasco Plantation Co. in Mexico. The machine cost $3,300 and was shipped to Mexico by train.

Owens, who has long been an advocate of free trade, said Caterpillar needs more free trade agreements to maintain that lofty position, as do other exporters in the United States.

"We need to be able to continue to strike a reasonable balance. We have to maintain our competitive advantage going forward," he said.

Owens said 78 percent of the track-type tractors Caterpillar built in the United States in 2008 - mostly in East Peoria - were exported. A turnaround in the company's financial in 2010 "is going to have to revolve around the emerging markets" and industries such as oil and gas exploration that are in need of Caterpillar equipment.

Noting Caterpillar has benefitted from trade agreements in the past that allowed it to export duty free and thus be more competitive, Owens said it now needs the Obama administration to forward to Congress agreements pending with Panama, Colombia and South Korea.

"A lot of the heavy lifting has already been done (with those countries), and agreements would be very much in the best interests of our country," he said.

He said the duty on a Caterpillar machine can run as high as $200,000, making that equipment less attractive and thus less competitive in an emerging market without a free trade agreement with the United States.

Such as agreement, Owens added, "can have a very powerful impact on U.S. jobs."

Caterpillar's export business actually predates the company, at least under that name.

Holt Northern was a subsidiary of California-based Holt Manufacturing Co. That company later merged with the C. L. Best Tractor Co., changed its name to Caterpillar and moved its headquarters to East Peoria. Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan said the company name was made Caterpillar because that's what Benjamin Holt, founder of Holt Manufacturing, called his machines and he liked the name.

The machine that was exported, machine No. 102, was a Holt Caterpillar Model B with a 45-horsepower gasoline engine.

Caterpillar reacquired No. 102 in 1932, and the machine was stored at a Caterpillar facility in California until it was sold to a collector in 1968. The machine was restored and is on display today at the Heidrick Ag History Center in Woodland, Calif., Dugan said.

"It still runs, but is no longer working in the fields," he said.

AccuGrade™ Software for C-Series Loaders

A new laser-based AccuGradeTM grading system for Cat® C-Series Skid-Steer Loaders, Multi-Terrain Loaders and Compact Track Loaders combines the capability of the Level Best Grading Box with the C-Series loader's integral electro/hydraulic controls to create an automated grading system capable of extreme accuracy. The new system establishes flat or single-slope grades to within ± 0.25 inch (± 6.5 mm) without grade stakes or the expense of grade checkers and stake-setting surveyors. Machines grade more area per hour and are more fuel-efficient in the process.

The new AccuGrade system works with the loader's auxiliary-hydraulic system and integral controls to automatically adjust the elevation of the grading-box blade, eliminating undercuts and overfills (no reworks) and assuring that expensive base materials are spread to exact specifications (no penalties or wasted material). Plus, fewer people on site results in greater safety.

The Advanced Machine Information and Control System (AMICS) provides an in-cab display showing the blade's position relative to finished grade. A trigger switch on the implement joystick allows the operator to choose manual or automatic operation of the grading box, and with the system in its automatic mode, the operator need only steer the machine and control its speed to achieve precise grades. Support wheels ahead of the responsive, well-designed grading box blade extend the loader's wheel base for smooth cuts.

Easy installation, operating advantages

When the machine owner has purchased an 84-inch-wide ATI Level Best Grading Box (endorsed by Caterpillar) and a 360-degree laser transmitter, which establishes a reference plane at a set elevation and slope, the AccuGrade system is quickly assembled on AMICS-equipped units by mounting the laser receiver, installing the wiring harness, connecting auxiliary-hydraulic lines and installing operating software. (Cat dealers can install an AMICS kit on existing machines for a nominal cost.)

Unlike conventional laser grading systems, the AccuGrade system requires no additional externally mounted hydraulic valves or displays, nor any additional in-cab levers, switches, control boxes or cables. The integrated AccuGrade system allows use of the loader's existing controls, keeping the operator securely in the seat and protected by built-in safety features.

Also, the new AccuGrade system is hydraulically efficient, activating the loader's auxiliary-hydraulic circuit only when blade correction is required. Conventional systems, by contrast, require continuous flow in the auxiliary circuit and, subsequently, use more fuel and generate heat and noise.

The receiver in the AccuGrade system can be positioned virtually anywhere in the laser plane when establishing the benchmark, but conventional systems may require a painstaking process of centering the receiver in the plane. Also, the AccuGrade system's elevation offset can be set easily using the AMICS display, compared with having to precisely relocate the receiver on the mast or reposition the laser transmitter at the tripod in conventional systems.<s>.</s>

For more information about the new AccuGrade system, customers should contact their local Cat dealer or visit www.cat.com. For more information about the Level Best Grading Box Blade, customers should contact Jack Herr or Dale Sensenig at ATI Corp. (800-342-0905).

907H Rounds Out Strong Cat® Compact Wheel Loader Lineup

For Worldwide Release: October 2009

Release Number: 258PR09

The new Cat® 907H, the latest addition to the Cat Compact Wheel Loader range, fits between the popular 906H and 908H models to give buyers even more choices. The new 70-net horsepower (52-kW) model features a skid steer loader style coupler, auxiliary hydraulic system, Cat C3.4 diesel engine, two-speed hydrostatic drive, standard differential lock<s>s </s>in both axles, parallel-lift Z-bar loader linkage and high-visibility operator's station. Optional features-including high-flow hydraulics, ride control and speeder transmission-further enhance the 907H's performance and versatility in a diversity of landscaping, industrial and general-construction applications.

The hydraulically actuated skid-steer-loader-type coupler, which the 907H shares with the 906H and 908H, allows use of many of the hydro-mechanical work tools that customers presently own for Cat Skid Steer, Multi-Terrain and Compact Track Loaders. This capability expands the 907H's versatility and allows the machine to be easily integrated into existing small-equipment fleets. Standard auxiliary hydraulics, proportional third-function valve and continuous-flow capability provide a complete control package for work tools such as trenchers and stump grinders. The optional 33-gpm (125-L/min) high-flow system handles the most demanding tools-cold planers and snow blowers, for example.

Like its 906H and 908H counterparts, the new 907H features articulated steering for precise maneuvering and axle oscillation for positive traction in rough terrain. For added traction in poor underfoot conditions, differential locks (in both axles) can be engaged on the move to reduce wheel spin and tire wear. With parallel-lift Z-bar loader linkage, the fork-equipped 907H places loads surely and precisely, and when fitted with its 1.3-cubic yard (1.0 m³) bucket, the 907H works aggressively and has ample dump clearance. In all applications, the Tier-3-compliant Cat C3.4 engine delivers smooth power, excellent fuel economy and long life.

Operator amenities, serviceability and options

Any of the three operator stations available for the 907H-canopy, Comfort Cab or Deluxe Cab-ensures safety and comfort. An optional air ride seat combined with low-effort steering and pilot controls reduce operator fatigue and provide convenient, intuitive operation. The multi-functional joystick provides basic lift and tilt functions, as well as controls for selecting travel direction, travel speed, third-function hydraulics, continuous flow or activating the differential lock. The roomy 907H cabs are 5 inches higher than the 906H cab, providing expansive visibility to work tools and the surrounding work area.

To encourage good routine maintenance, the 907H has a high-opening engine hood and side service doors that allow easy, ground-level access to all major components and service points. The articulating hydraulic-oil cooler gives ready access to the radiator, and both are easily cleaned. Vertical, spin-on filters (engine-oil, hydraulic and fuel) are replaced quickly with no spillage, and S.O.S. valves and pressure taps are conveniently located in the engine compartment.

The 907H's capability to handle hydro-mechanical work tools is enhanced with an optional wiring harness that permits fourth-function control (broom angling, for instance). In addition, an available creeper feature, complete with hand throttle, allows the operator to easily maintain consistent, slow ground speed, while the work tool runs at high speed for efficient production.

The optional speeder transmission, which adds a two-range gearbox to the drive train, provides travel speeds to 21.7 mph (35 km/h) and incorporates hydraulically actuated, oil-immersed disc brakes in the front axle. Available ride control cushions boom-cylinder movement during load-and-carry operations, resulting in a smoother ride for the operator and less material spillage.

For more information about the Cat 907H Compact Wheel Loader, customers should contact a local Cat® dealer or visit www.cat.com.

October 2, 2009, San Diego, CA – Whether it's standard products, modification of existing products, or entirely new products, Caterpillar® and Hawthorne Cat® have a long history of successful support for our troops and federal employees in just about any application.

Caterpillar first found its value during World War I. Caterpillar crawlers were first used for towing heavy equipment and artillery to the bogged forward areas. The English, noting their success, quickly modified the concept into the first practical tank, which forever changed ground warfare. Caterpillar tractors themselves served the war effort by hauling artillery and supplies. In all, more than 10,000 Caterpillar vehicles served the Allied forces, and the international exposure that the Caterpillar tractor received during the war did much to popularize the tracked vehicle. During World War II, Caterpillar products found fame with the Seabees, Construction Battalions of the United States Navy, who built airfields and other facilities in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Caterpillar equipment and engines has also played a major role through the Korean and Vietnam wars, Operation Desert Storm during the early 1990s to Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts of today.

Hawthorne Cat has been supporting this effort since 1956. The initial San Diego Caterpillar service territory included Camp Pendleton and the various local US Naval bases. Its services have ranged from direct military support to working with local major defense contractors to meet military requirements. Providing packaging support for AOE Ships in the late 1980’s, rental equipment to the Point Loma Naval Submarine Base for submarine maintenance and supplying and installing machine gun mounts on U.S. Marine vehicles are just a few of the diverse projects Hawthorne has performed. This is in addition to one of its core competencies – servicing Caterpillar tractors.

In 2004, Hawthorne expanded its defense and military support with the acquisition of the Caterpillar service territory in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. It has added Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, Barking Sands and Anderson Air Force Base to the list, just to name a few. Prime and stand-by power generation, rentals of construction equipment and service, both on land and on vessels, are just a few recent projects Hawthorne has been involved in.

In 2008, Hawthorne became a General Services Administration (GSA) Contractor Holder. Working with GSA, Hawthorne has been successful in offering the military “non-traditional” services. It made the investment to assist the military in streamlining their acquisition process for services often sought. These services include construction equipment rentals/leases, portable power generation rentals, field and shop service at all Hawthorne locations.

Today, Hawthorne is fully engaged in supporting the U.S. Navy relocation efforts in Guam with facilities, equipment and personnel. Working directly with the military and local defense contractors, Hawthorne is busy supplying equipment, rentals, service and local expertise.

While Caterpillar and Hawthorne can provide everything from power modules to track-type tractors to motor graders, it's more than what we make and provide - it's what we make possible for the federal government agencies and military commands that we support in our service territories.

Green Marine: Caterpillar Marine Power Systems Demonstrates Commitment to Sustainability at Diesel Technology Forum Event

Further demonstrating leadership in emissions reduction technology, Caterpillar Inc. will be the only marine diesel engine manufacturer featured at the Diesel Technology Forum event held in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Titled “Clean Diesel Power: Ready for Tomorrow, Working Today,” the Diesel Technology Forum will transform America’s “power capital” into the “clean diesel power capital” when dozens of manufacturers display their newest technology for the nation’s Congressional representatives.

“Providing policymakers an up close and personal view of technology makes for a more rounded and realistic understanding of the importance of diesel and the progress the industry has made on so many fronts – on-road, off-road and marine as well,” explains Allen Schaeffer, Executive Director of the Diesel Technology Forum. “We want them to leave with the right information so that in making that next policy decision on clean air, energy or climate, they have some experience with clean diesel.”

Caterpillar will not only display clean diesel machinery on Woodrow Wilson Plaza, but will also feature the debut display of the Cat® 3500 engine upgrade kit technology. This technology is currently being field tested in several sites throughout the United States, including Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As customers face additional regulatory pressure from municipalities, states and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the need for updated engine technology has become crucial – without sacrificing the level of performance, reliability and fuel efficiency that customers have come to expect from Caterpillar.

“Caterpillar has long been a supporter of environmental protection and progress,” explains David Holt, Product Support Process Manager with Caterpillar Marine Power Systems. “The Clean Diesel Power event will allow Caterpillar representatives to reach out to legislators to not only support their efforts to continue promoting emission reduction in their local areas, but also demonstrate the commitment from Caterpillar to helping customers in their constituencies meet regulatory guidelines and sustainability goals. It won’t be an easy road – but Caterpillar is in for the long haul.”

The engine technology, developed by Caterpillar, will allow customers to update their pre-EPA Tier I mechanical engines into a fully compliant electronically controlled engine by making intrinsic changes to the engine during a normal overhaul. These changes can be made without having to remove the engines from the vessel – an often time-consuming and expensive task – and without adding weight to the boat itself. For more information about Cat marine engines, contact your local Cat dealer or go to MARINE.CAT.COM.

# # #

PEORIA, IL – Caterpillar’s (NYSE: CAT) commitment to align its sustainabilityefforts with business strategy has earned the company a place on Newsweek’s GreenRankings, securing the #73 spot out of 500 companies listed. Caterpillar was named #5in the Industrial Goods sector. The rankings are based on the company's environmentalpolicies, practices and overall reputation.

"Throughout Caterpillar we work diligently to hold our company to higherstandards in the area of sustainable development," said Caterpillar Group President, Doug Oberhelman. “This recognition is proof our hard work and long term strategies are paying off."

A key focus for Caterpillar has been progress toward 2020 goals for products, services and solutions, as well as operations. Cited specifically in the write up of thecompany is the work being done to offset the effects of the carbon footprint of itsequipment, including plans to reduce the GHG emissions of its entire product line by 20percent by 2020 and reduce the absolute GHG emissions from its facilities by 25 percent by the same year.

“As I have said before, we believe the sustainability of our world and thesustainability of our business are inseparable,” said Oberhelman. “We recognize thechallenges of sustainable development are numerous and daunting, but so are theopportunities. Cat’s placement on Newsweek’s Green Rankings solidifies our globalcommitment to the company, our customers and the communities where we live andwork.” The full list can be viewed at http://greenrankings.newsweek.com/top500/.

About Caterpillar:For more than 80 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been making progress possible and drivingpositive and sustainable change on every continent.
