Video | UCSD Jacobs Medical Center Installs 4 Cat Gen Sets

The Jacobs Medical Center recently installed four Caterpillar 3516 CHD standby generator sets. The generators had to be installed before construction could begin on the structure around them. The four generators were installed in just under an hour. The diesel fire generators will provide emergency power for the hospital in the event of a power loss.

Is Your Generator Set Sized Accurately?

Generator sets need to be accurately sized for their intended jobs. Improperly sizing your generator set can be harmful to the engine. A generator set that is too small for the task can result in power failure. Purchasing more storage and additional generator sets can be expensive. A generator set that is is too large or lightly loaded can lead to wet stacking which causes the excess fuel to pass through the engine's exhaust system. Using accurate generator set sizing software can ensure your genset can handle the task.

When a Switchgear Retrofit Makes Sense

A switchgear retrofit can help improve your facility's performance and power system. Electrical systems can quickly become outdated and obsolete over time. A switchgear retrofit can include a software update, hardware retrofit, or a complete overhaul of your electrical power system. Hawthorne Cat technicians can retrofit Cat and non-Cat branded paralleling switchgear to improve overall performance.

Unsure if you are in the market for a switchgear retrofit? It's time for a retrofit if you meet any of these requirements:

• Outdated switchgear
• Decreased system performance
• Sequence of operations not working as designed
• Changes to site configurations

Kyocera | Hawthorne Cat Customer Spotlight

In September 2011, San Diego was hit by a widespread blackout that left most of Southern California without power for hours. Kyocera America, Inc. a mobile device electronics company, experienced first-hand how a massive power outage can affect a mission critical business. According to the article, "Black Start" in RunReady Magazine, a power failure can be extremely detrimental if the furnaces lose power, forcing them to cool off and shut down.

Throughout the power outage, Hawthorne Power Systems was on call and ready to help Kyocera. Hawthorne quickly provided them with a rental generator to keep power flowing and saved Kyocera from what could have been a costly disaster.

As a result of the power outage, Kyocera replaced their outdated gas generators with a new cogeneration plant. They installed two new Cat gas generators as well as a Cat 3512B diesel generator to ensure long-term standby power and improve overall operating efficiency.

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) are an integral component in Caterpillar Generator Sets and are responsible for transferring power between utility and generator. Hawthorne Power Systems offers a broad range of automatic transfer switch products that are positioned to support virtually any type of emergency power application from simple, single ATS installations to highly complex, multi-ATS/generator switchgear systems. Today every standby generator set that is sold requires at least one ATS, and some cases require multiple units.

Fluid Analysis | The Importance of S.O.S.

Hawthorne's S.O.S.SM (Scheduled Oil Sampling) can put your equipment on a regular diagnostic program.

S.O.S. identifies abnormal wear by determining the amount of various wear elements in the oil from a particular compartment. Sample data is then permanently recorded to track the history of each compartment of each machine and warn of impending failure. In addition to oil, the lab can evaluate fuel, hydraulic fluid and coolant for indicators that can lead to early, unexpected failures.

A Coolant Analysis Can Help Prevent Engine Failure

Coolant or cooling-system problems contribute to more than 50% of all engine failures. These failures can be due to inadequate cooling system maintenance, incorrect concentration, poor operational procedures such as extensive lugging or inadequate cool-down procedures, or system problems such as stray electrical current or block-heater failure. These problems will eventually affect the oil condition, and may cause oil oxidation or anti-wear additive dropout.
