ELECTRIC DRIVE POWERTRAIN: HOW IT WORKS
Mechanical Energy → Electric Energy → Inverter → Generator → Final Drives

Simply put, the D8 XE’s electric drive powertrain converts mechanical energy into electric energy. The inverter acts as a bridge to the generator, which powers the final drives. Electric Drive uses up to 10%1 less fuel than its standard equivalent. With electric drive, there are no gears to shift. Power to the ground is continuously optimized whether the machine is traveling or mid-push. Forward momentum continues throughout the push for faster cycle times. Operators just choose the ground speed and go. The D8 XE certified powertrain and hydraulics rebuild is up to 15%2 less than the same rebuild for a mechanical transmission.
BUILT TO WORK
The electric drive powertrain has fewer moving parts than a conventional transmission. The reduced number of parts and fluids over time, plus the longer service intervals compounds up to 5%3 lower maintenance costs. Rebuilding a machine’s transmission keeps a reliable machine in the fleet for less than the cost of a replacement.

OPERATOR HELPERS: ASSIST TECHNOLOGY
Assist features help make work easier, especially for less experienced operators. Some blade and steering functions are automated so newer operators can work at productivity levels closer to their veteran counterparts. Seasoned operators can enjoy reduced effort and fatigue, along with faster, more accurate results.

Cat Assist with Attachment Ready Option (ARO) includes:

  • Slope Assist – Holds blade angles without GPS
  •
  • Steer Assist – Keeps machine traveling straight
  •
  • Stable Blade – Makes finish dozing easier by controlling lift and tilt functions and responsiveness of the blade
  •
  • Traction Control – Reduces track slip to minimize wear*
  •
  • AutoCarry™ – Automatically maintains full blade loads and includes floor settings*
  •
  • Blade Load Monitor – Helps ensure full blade loads*
  •
  • Blade Recall – Returns blade to preset position

  • AutoRip – Adjusts ripper depth, shank position, and track speed (for D7 & D8-sized machines only)
  •
  • ARO – Sensors (IMUs) on machine for GPS capability
STAY SAFE: DETECT HAZARDS
Detect safety technologies deliver the power to see, sense, mitigate, and manage potential hazards by supplementing operator attention, perception, and situational awareness. Some features are available as factory-installed. Certain features are not compatible with Cat Command.

  • Surround Vision – Upgrade your rear camera to a Smart camera with the addition of three more cameras on the front and side of the machine. A full-color, 254 mm (10 in) dedicated touchscreen display is mounted above the front cab window display as an always-on view around the machine.
  •
  • Seat Belt System

    • Seat Belt Alert – audible and visual prompts for the operator. An optional external lamp serves as a clear indicator of the operator’s attention to safe operating.
    •
    • Seat Belt Misuse – Identifies and alerts the operator of improper seat belt use
    •
    • Seat Belt Inhibit – Can prevent the machine from traveling if the seat belt is not fastened
    •

  •
  • Rear People Detection – When the system detects a person/people in one of the rear detection zones, it sends visual and audible alerts to the operator using the in-cab display.
  •
  • Reverse Motion Inhibit – Prevents the machine from going into either forward or reverse gear when it is stationary and there is an active detection in one of the rear detection zones.
Certain features require additional license purchase or hardware installation for full functionality.
WASTE HANDLING ARRANGEMENT
  • Improved sealing throughout the machine helps keep dust and debris out.
  • Cooling system designed for high debris environments, with automatic reversing fan and swing-out cleanout access. XE dozers are more efficient at keeping themselves cool, making them ideal in waste applications.
  • Waste cab has impact-resistant polycarbonate doors, eliminating the need for door screens.
  • Landfill blades and center-hole track shoes help you optimize your waste handler for the job.
  • Specialized guarding and seals throughout the machine help protect major components from impact and airborne debris.
  • Multi-layer final drive guards, including a labyrinth-style guard with 90-degree turns, help keep dirt and debris away from the Duo-Cone™ seal to protect final drive oil.
  • Pivot shaft seal guards help prevent debris from entering and damaging seals.
  • Striker bars help prevent debris from damaging the machine.
  • Tilt cylinder with rotating bushing type design help wrapping materials to roll off hoses.
  • Heavy duty hinged radiator guard protects radiator and fan from penetration by material coming straight in or from under the blade.
  • Hinged heavy duty belly guard for easy cleaning and to keep debris out.
  • Lights mounted up and away from main debris area for protection, while still giving you plenty of light on the work area. An optional 12-light LED package provides 360-degree coverage.
  • Powered precleaner is integrated and increases the cab filter change interval to 1,000 hours.
  • Laminated thermal shields and insulated Clean Emissions Module.
  • SUSTAINABILITY
  • Cat® diesel engines are required to use ULSD (ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel with 15 ppm of sulfur or less) and are compatible* with ULSD blended with the following lower-carbon intensity fuels** up to:

    • 20% biodiesel FAME (fatty acid methyl ester)***
    •
    • 100% renewable diesel, HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuels
    •
  • Refer to guidelines for successful application. Please consult your Cat dealer or “Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations” (SEBU6250) for details.
  • The Cat® C15 engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, Korea Tier 5, and Japan 2014 emission standards.
  • The D8 XE emits up to 10%4 less CO2 than the D8 (22A) lock-up clutch machine.
